In England, 340,600 people received home care services in 2008.
In the UK , 457,383 people received home care services in 2008.
Between 2000 and 2008, the number of households in England receiving home care services has decreased by 18 per cent.
In England , only 59,148 households were receiving low level care in 2008 - two hours or less per week.
2,450,000 older people in England have care needs.
80 per cent of people in need of home care do not get it from the state.
According to CSCI, 1.5 million people in England have care and support needs that the state does not meet.
About 410,000 older people in the UK have an unmet need for help with practical household jobs.
27,000 older people in England are receiving direct payments.
Residential care
In 2008, there were estimated to be about 394,000 older people out a total of 418,000 people in residential care.
The UK average annual fee for a single room in a private residential home is £24,492. For a nursing home, it is £35,100.
On average, weekly fees for residential care in England are £60 higher than the standard council payment.
Older People as Carers
There are between five and six million unpaid carers looking after a relative or friend.
Nearly a quarter of all carers (24 per cent) aged 75 plus provide 50 hours or more of informal care.
2.8m people aged 50 and over provide unpaid care and 5 per cent of people aged 85 plus provide unpaid care.
Carers are currently saving the UK economy an estimated £87 billion a year
